I’ve been holding off from writing this because it’s been too hard to find the right words. But some weeks ago we lost our much loved family pet – and my occasional writing partner (see the video above) – Molly.
She was pretty old – we don’t know exactly how old as she was a rescue cat. She was on two kinds of serious medication which she had to take every day, one for thyroid and the other for kidneys. The vet had given her 6-9 months to live and we were already past the 6 month marker. Poor old Molly was getting very doddery on her paws, and was becoming increasingly tired and inactive. She was also eating less and less, in fact, at the end hardly anything.
Then suddenly she had a new lease of life. She started behaving like a kitten again, amazing us by catching two small rodents for the first time ever, despite not having a single tooth in her mouth. She also took to going off on outdoor jaunts. Until one day she disappeared for one final adventure.
We don’t know where she went and we don’t know what happened to her. We posted flyers with all our neighbours, and got a few phone calls about cat sightings but none of them turned out to be Molly. We knew she couldn’t last long without her daily medication, but we hoped and hoped that she might turn up. Days turned into weeks and it was clear, after all, that she wasn’t coming back.
So wherever you are, Molly, we hope you had a blast on that last great, crazy adventure. We miss you.
So sorry to hear this, Roger. Not knowing what happened is especially hard. Let’s hope she went out in a blaze of glory.
What can we say, Roger? Such a lovely cat, and she chose her own way to go. What a lady!
So sad, Roger. Thank you for resurrecting her tenacious character in action for that is a lovely memory of her. My sympathies to you all.
Thank you for your messages, whisks, MG and Rhian. Molly was one of a kind.
I didn’t realize when you mentioned kitties before that they were replacements for good old Molly. I’m so sorry to hear that. Who will teach them to climb you and interrupt your writing?
