How many words a day?

I’ve been neglecting the bloody blog recently, though if anyone’s noticed I’ll be amazed. The fact is I’m trying to get somewhere with my new book, which will be the last in my quartet of Porfiry Petrovich novels.

I originally set myself a fairly steep daily target of 1,000 words. But I figured that if I could write 1,000 a day, I could just as easily write 1,100 a day, giving me a ‘free’ 1,000 words every ten days.

I soon found I could manage 1,100 a day. So I thought: right, it’s not much of a stretch to get that up to 1,200 words a day. Giving me my ‘free’ 1,000 words in double the time!

That also proved to be within my limits. In fact, some days I notched up more than 1,200 and even got to 1,500 on occasion. If I could do it once, I can do it every day, I thought.

So with 1,500 words my new daily target, I get my extra ‘free’ 1,000 words every two days now.

I admit, I do have to push myself pretty hard to make that and it has caused me some problems, such as the day I forgot to collect my son after his school trip. Ooops.

But mostly it’s been fine, and I’ve even nudged up to 1,600 or 1,700 some days. Hmmm. That gives me an idea….
