100 years. 100 days. 100 lives. 100 words. 100 writers.

You may have seen the news coverage about the centenary of the Battle of Amiens earlier this week, which began the 100 day offensive leading up to the armistice 100 years ago. To commemorate the end of the First World War, a group of writers called 26 has invited 100 writers each to write a centena – a piece of writing exactly 100 words long – inspired by the life of someone who lived during the Great War. I’m very honoured to be one of those writers.

The centenas are being published on the First World War Centenary website one day at a time over the 100 days running up to Armistice Day. There will also be a book, the profits from which will go to the charity War Child.

Today’s centena is a moving exploration of loss and fragmented memory by Ed Prichard.
